Fat Scales and Measuring Body Fat
Fat scales are different from bathroom scales, but many are unaware of how and why. It is extremely important to get accurate information about our health, and fat scales can better determine what kind of overall shape a person is in versus the standard weight scale. Fat scales can also guide a person who is concerned about getting rid of body fat in the right direction to help set up a plan for better health.
There are three main ways to calculate body fat measurement. You can use skinfold calipers, home fat scales or hydrostatic weighing.
Skin fold Calipers
Skin fold calipers are an inexpensive way to calculate a person's body fat measurements and percentage, but their use depends on proper measurements and correct use. If a person does not know how to use the calipers properly, the measurements obtained could be inaccurate. It is best to have a medical professional conduct the test, as doctors know how to use the calipers properly.
Hydrostatic Weighing
You can use hydrostatic weighing to get an accurate measuring of fat, and this involves submerging yourself in a hydrostatic tank of water. The examiner first calculates your body density by measuring the amount of water displaced when you enter the tank. After that, a formula is calculated to figure out your percentage of fat in your body based on your density measurement. It sounds complicated and, quite frankly it is. A problem with hydrostatic weighing is, of course, that there simply aren't hydrostatic tanks around every corner and in every medical facility.
Body fat scales
Body fat scales can be used in the home to come up with a relatively accurate body fat percentage. You can use them just like a bathroom scale, except that you input certain information before use. Normally, body fat scales involve the use of information involving your height and your age range. From that data, the fat scales are able to calculate your approximate percentage and display it on the screen.
The Next Step
If a person is concerned about body fat, a fat scale can provide better and more accurate information about overall health and percentage of fat found in the body, than a standard bathroom scale. Fat scales can differentiate between what weight is comprised of body fat and what weight is comprised of other body parts. Having body fat measured with a fat scale should be the first step a person takes in the quest to get healthy, keep in shape, and live longer.
